ABOUT VSP

VSP heritage: meeting critical needs
Veterinary Specialty Products, Inc. (VSP) officially began in 1992, but the impetus for the company began many years before in a small animal, avian and exotic multi-practice veterinary hospital in New York State.

Along with others, Robert B. Altman, DVM and the hospital’s long-time office manager, Adina Rae Freedman, recognized that most veterinary tools on the market were inadequate for examining and treating exotic animals such as birds, ferrets, rabbits and other small mammals, and reptiles.

Restraint devices topped the list as one of the most critical needs. At this time, many exotic animal professionals were making restraint devices out of x-ray film – a laborious and not always effective solution.

First VSP product
In response to this critical need, Dr. Altman imported a small bird restraint collar from a European manufacturer and presented it to other exotic animal professionals. They were interested in it, as well as one for larger parrots, which Ms. Freedman designed and manufactured. Thus, the spark for VSP was ignited.

For several years, VSP offered both restraint collars, along with a few other products, such as sterile surgical drapes and scales.

Upon retirement from the practice, Dr. Altman and Ms. Freedman devoted their time to adding new products to assist exotic animal professionals. The VSP line of products grew to include additional restraint devices, feeding and endotracheal tubes, surgical instruments, cloacal and mouth speculums, and a unique avian exam room perch.

Meanwhile the VSP story still resonates
In 2005, the two VSP partners sold the company to Darlia King Morris, DVM and David R. Morris, owners of ZuPreem®, a specialty nutrition company that researches, manufacturers and markets diets for non-traditional animals.

VSP was established by listening and responding to the challenging needs of exotic animal professionals, and the current owners plan to uphold the tradition. The company will continue to offer the current line of VSP products, as well as designing and manufacturing additional innovative and unique special-use products to enhance the quality of exotic animal medicine everywhere.

Veterinarians can expect the same great customer service that consists of one-to-one contacts, fast order fulfillment and shipping, and competitive pricing. Take a moment to browse through the extensive on-line VSP catalog.
